Antartica with an Iceberg

Success Story – Australian Antarctic Division

The Australian Antarctic Program, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment, seeks to understand one of the most challenging places on earth: Antarctica. By conducting expeditions and working with scientists, we aim to unlock how we address climate change, the human footprint in Antarctica, and how to conserve and sustain the Southern Ocean fisheries.

The problem is access to digital images in remote locations

With remote stations in the field, an essential requirement is that X-rays, ultrasounds and other digital images can be accessed no matter where they are taken. The Australian Antarctic Division employs over 70 scientific staff and 60 associated research, technical and administrative support staff. Often, many staff need to be aware of what is happening at a project, so effectively capturing images and communicating them remotely and quickly is vital for the Antarctica team.

The Solution – State-of-the-art digital Imaging solutions and software

ARO Systems became involved as an expert in imaging and digital solutions for the Antarctic Program more than 8 years ago.

Working closely with the team at Antarctic Division, ARO Systems have provided: Their Computed Radiography Systems with service and support for their projects in Casey, Davis Macquarie Island, Mawson, Aurora Australis (ship), Containerised Medical Facility and Kingston, the head office for training. As part of this installation, PACS (picture Archive Communication System) software was also supplied to bring images from remote locations to their head office via satellite.

In 2020, ARO Systems supplied eight digital radiography systems that were updated with 5 DR panels and chargers for redundancy at the remote stations and the new Nuyina Ice Breaker.

It has been very important to have a system that allows specialist referrers and teams to access X-rays, ultrasounds, dental X-rays, and specialist eye, ear, skin, and other images, no matter how remote. ARO Systems is proud to support such an important program.
